James B. Chen, MD is a highly skilled, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee total joint replacement. Embracing a personalized, patient-first approach, he believes in treating the individual, not the condition. To Dr. Chen, joint replacements aren’t just joint replacements, but are rather the means to help his patients achieve their unique lifestyle goals.

Committed to delivering the highest level of care, Dr. Chen uses minimally invasive techniques, navigated and robotic technology and advanced perioperative monitoring technologies that help patients not only recover more quickly, but also stay active for as long as possible.

Dr. Chen graduated cum laude from California Polytechnic State University with his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology before attending the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He trained and gained recognition with numerous clinical excellence awards for his surgical skills at both UCLA, where he did his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery, and the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), where he was an arthroplasty surgical fellow.

Dedicated to the advancement of his subspecialty, Dr. Chen remains active in the community. He sits on the board of directors for the California Orthopedic Association, is a committee member for the American Academy of Hip and Knee Replacement Specialists, and serves as a reviewer for various scientific journals. Dr. Chen travels nationally to educate fellow surgeons on advanced technology and robotic techniques in hip and knee replacement, and he has authored and contributed to numerous publications in leading academic journals.

Dr. Chen is an Orange County native who grew up in Irvine, California. As a former collegiate football player, he prioritizes an active lifestyle and enjoys hiking, mountain biking, surfing and staying outdoors with his family. Dr. Chen is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring state-of-the-art joint replacement care to his home community and to help patients on their journey to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
